The name 'krummhorn' first appears in Dresden in 1489 referred as an organ stop, which suggests that crumhorns had been in common usage for some time.

In fact they were probably one of the earliest windcap instruments in Europe and certainly the most popular in the Renaissance (16th and early 17th centuries). The crumhorn probably developed in northern Italy in the late 15th century; it soon spread to Germany and to the rest of Europe. It was played mainly by professional musicians at courts and in the larger town bands. King Henry VIII (England) was a skilled crumhorn player and had his own collection of the instruments. The crumhorn remained in use into the 17th century, but rapidly lost ground in the middle of the century as taste changed and their limited compass and expressive range no longer met musical needs. Like most Renaissance wind instruments, they were made and used in different sizes.

No good explanation has been given for their curved shape; the supposed projection of the sound towards the listening audience is hardly noticeable and does not make in practice any difference to the tone or volume of the instrument.

Crumhorns have a rather strident buzzy tone but quieter than their conical-bore relatives (rauschpfeife and shawm). The windcap itself protects the reed and also creates a wind chamber, removing the need for embouchure control -unlike the shawm from the same period whose double reed is placed in the mouth (like that of modern oboe).

The Musée instrumental du Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Brussels houses a unique set in extremely fine condition of six crumhorns complete with their original case, being unquestionably the most perfect set of original crumhorns in existence.

RWC Crumhorn

Set of modern crumhorns by Moeck, Celle
  Finished and Kit RWC Crumhorn

We chose the set of crumhorns in the the Brussels Conservatoire and in the Gemeentemuseum as the models for our instruments. We visited the museums, played the instruments, took accurate measurements and obtained X-rays. From our researches we have made a set of crumhorns which we firmly believe is the finest ever available.

A coated bore and specially designed plastic reed ensure they are easy to play and maintain. With a cane reed the instruments give a full reedy sound. With a range of just over an octave, some models have one or two extra keys to provide a chromatic upward extension. The soprano and tenor standard instruments are pitched in c (at a=440), and the alto and bass in f. It is also common an alto in g.

Our Crumhorns are produced in five sizes and two sets.

Our finished soprano crumhorn is scaled from the tenor, no record of a soprano having survived to the present day. The soprano crumhorn has one upward extension key and a range of c' - e''.

Our finished f alto crumhorn is based on the alto in the famous original set in the Gemeentemuseum, Holland. The f alto crumhorn has one upward extension key and a range of f - a'.

Our finished g alto crumhorn is based on the alto in the set in the Gemeentemuseum. The g alto crumhorn has no upward extension keys and a range of g - a'.

Our finished tenor crumhorn is based on the tenor in the set in the Gemeentemuseum. The tenor crumhorn has one upward extension key and a range of c - e'.

Our finished bass crumhorn is based on the bass in the set in the Gemeentemuseum. Our bass crumhorn has one upward extension key and a range of F - a. The bass crumhorn also has a lower key for the bottom note, closed by the little finger of either hand depending on whether the player is left or right handed.

These instruments above are made from the finest English sycamore and are presented with a plastic reed, a reed care and maintenance leaflet and fingering chart.

An attractive 'attache' style carrying case and a cane reed are available as optional extras if required.

Each instrument is entirely hand built by 'in-house' experienced craftsmen to special order in our own workshops in Toledo (Spain) to the highest standard of craftsmanship. They come with 12 months warranty and 12 months free access to our 'helpline' for advice on setting up, playing and maintenance.

You can also have two sets witch offer a substantial saving over buying the instruments individually.

The crumhorn ATTB set is the more historically accurate arrangement of alto in g, two tenors in c and a bass in F, although the alto in f is sometimes substituted.

The crumhorn SATB set is the conventional arrangement of soprano in c', alto in f, tenor in c and bass in F.

A special attache style carrying case for all four instruments is available as optional extras if required.

The same range of Crumhorns are offered in kit form for home assembly.

Our Crumhorn kits are ones of the easiest kits in our range to build.

To ensure success, even for the first time builder, each kit includes:
A fully dimensioned working template,
A manual with clear and concise step-by-step full assembly instructions.

The windcap, stem and bobbin are all turned from English sycamore ready for assembly. The stem has been steamed and bent ready for assembly.

All the hardware parts, brass ring, extension keys, cork, leather and drills are included.

A plastic reed is supplied as standard with the option of cane upon request.

The soprano crumhorn built from our kit has one upward extension key giving it a chromatic range of c' - e''.

The alto in f crumhorn built from our kit has two upward extension keys giving it a chromatic range of f - b'(c').

The g alto in g crumhorn does not have any upward extension keys and has a chromatic range of g - a'.

The tenor crumhorn built from our kit has two upward extension keys giving it a chromatic range of c - f'(g').

The bass crumhorn built from our kit has two upward extension keys, a lower key for the bottom F and at full breath pressure plays the normal range of F - b(c). The plastic reeded version however can be under blown by a fifth giving a bottom note of CC and a range of two octaves, obviating the need for a great bass instrument!

An attractive attache style carrying case is available as an optional extra to protect the instruments above when finished.

Our ATTB and SATB cornamuse kits offer a substantial saving, over buying the kits individually. All the parts are as per the individual kits but avoiding any duplication. The kits can be packed in an optional single carrying case which can be used to protect the instruments when finished.
